Kasteel van ’s-Gravenwezel, a Belgian castle surrounded by sprawling gardens and woodlands, is the residence of Axel Vervoordt and his wife. Belgian antiques dealer and decorator Axel is know for mixing antiques with contemporary art and designing using the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. This philosophy embraces humility at its core; It can be explained as a way of saying “thank you” to nature (wabi means “sober refinement” and sabi means “patina”). Wabi-Sabi looks at beauty as something imperfect, impermanent and incomplete with an inherent honesty.
“Design is more than just how something looks, it is also how it makes you feel.”
Vervoordt’s castle is magical and awe inspiring. There is a soft dream like existence to the castle in which boundaries between the indoors and out are seamlessly blurred, and furniture upholstered in whites and muted tones. I do hope to see this wondrous home in person some day.
